de Quartet New Generation: Debut a Hit with CDBaby

“We are working hard on finishing our debut CD” Heide Schwarz announced in our interview with the Quartet New Generation last November. Despite of all the hard work, things have taken almost half a year to come to a conclusion. In March, the ladies presented “Ethereal” to a circle of friends at the Bewohnbar in Berlin and since June, it is now officially available via their own site or the edition zeitraum label, known for its excuisite packaging.

Just like their live program, “Ethereal” has turned into a bipolar affair. On the one and, there’s the 16th century repertoire, in which the Quartet New Generation explores the freshness and contemporary edge of a music hundreds of years old. And then there are the collaborations with young composers, who have turned into a trademark for the band. Especially Venice-born Italian composer G. Mancuso is represented with a plethora of new material.

First reactions have shown the potential this seemingly uncommercial and niche-oriented music has: Deutschlandradio Kultur featured the Quartet New Generation and “Ethereal” with a special and the important online retailer CDBaby was so impressed by the amount of orders the album received that it decided to post it on their first page for a few days.

As one of the CD Baby reviewers put it: “QNG has demonstrated with excitement the fact that the recorder is indeed, a viable contemporary instrument deserving of new repertoire.” It would seem about time we asked for a promo copy and found out about that ourselves!
