About Us
tokafi is one of the web's leading magazines for sound art, contemporary composition and improvised music. We feature experimental music culture in its full diversity through in-depth interviews, album discussions, concert reports, label profiles and ebooks. Our ambition has always been to be more than just a news source or review site, but to put you in touch with the artists and their concepts, ideas and approaches.
Established in 2004 by music journalist and copywriter Tobias Fischer, tokafi now has a decade of experience to its credit. Originally a PDF mag on classical music and contemporary composition titled mouvement nouveau, the publication has gradually expanded into a variety of genres. In 2012, the signature series of 15 Questions received its own website and is now a fully-fledged sister publication.
Over the past ten years, we have conducted almost 1000 interviews with some of the figureheads of the experimental scene and featured close to 2000 albums, next to a variety of expansive stories and specials. Ebooks are one of the pivotal pillars of our future strategy, with a multimedia publication on the work of New York based composer Kenneth Kirschner fast approaching completion. Throughout this year, we will also continue our series of discography articles on the work of seminal saxophonist and improviser John Butcher.
After two slightly more quiet years spent re-conceptualising the publication and relocating it to Berlin, 2014 certainly looks set to be another busy year.
