Tortoise: TNT Red-Hot Vinyl Repressing Thrill Jockey are making a classic of the Post Rock genre available again for all Vinyl afficionados. At the time of its release in 1997, „TNT“ followed up Tortoise's „Millions Now Living Will Never Die...“, a work considered a milestone by the press and unsurpassable by its fans, arriving in the wake of a ten-month break. It turned out to be a counterpoint to the conceptual edge of „Millions“ with its grand introductory epic “DJed“, presenting more focussed track structures, while fusing them into a coherent 65-minute entity. It billowed out into Jazz and Ambient, relying both on a more stripped-down acoustic approach on the one hand and on full-on electronic experiments on the other. Despite initial doubts and scepticism, „TNT“ would go on to become the band's most succesful album and quickly sell out the alloted contingent of Vinyl copies. Calls for a new edition never subsided over the years and Thrill Jockey have answered these calls with plans of rereleasing the band's entire back catalogue. As they announced, a previous Red Vinyl repress of Tortoise's 2001 album „Standards“ has already all but disappeared, so it looks like you'd better be quick or miss out on this treat again.
Thanks to its organic surface and fluent lines, „TNT“ discreetly hid the amount of prost-production and general care which had gone into it. After the actual studio sessions, pieces were often rearranged digitally, keeping their warm timbres intact, while transforming sections significantly and combining phrases from various jams into new compositions. Brass, woodwinds and strings also considerably extended the tight band line-up of Tortoise, making them sound rich and refined. Certainly today, it still sounds perfectly up to date and has aged well despite the group progressing even further on subsequent efforts.
Thrill Jockey is making „TNT“ available as a 2LP set, which will include a coupon for a free MP3 download of the album.
