cu Marialy Pacheco: "Mi Azul" presents a Cuban kind of blue

After a Jazz CD with her Trio, Pianist Marialy Pacheco is now presenting audiences with her first solo full-length outside of her native Cuba. “Mi Azul”, released on German label Weltwunder, consists of original material and carefully selected traditionals, featuring a string of tracks in the colourful zone between Jazz and South American rhythms. Thanks to its minimalistic setup, the disc also allowed Pacheco to focus on her Classical roots again, shaped by a years of studying in Havanna and all but forgotten because of her success in improvisation. With its mix of many different styles and diverse moods, “Mi Azul” has turned out a recognisable and extremely personal album.

Its title is a direct reference to a youth spent in Cuba and her new home in Bremen: “The blue of Cuban skies is completeley different from the blue of German skies”, Marialy Pacheco explained, “And then blue is also the colour and ambiance captured by every note of my Piano.” She knew exactly where she wanted to go for this effort: “Mi Azul” was recorded in just two days in Radio Bremen’s main broadcasting hall.

Even though “Mi Azul” focusses on the temperaments between keys and revels in oneiric introspection, there are also plenty of red-blooded outbursts of fire and passion to be found on the album. In this respect, the opening title track, with its groovy bass loops and soft, jazzy chords is a perfect example of Marialy Pacheco’s voice.

Marialy Pacheco shot to national fame at the age of 18, when she won a competition in Cuba. At the Chorolympiade in Bremen, she is feted by the jury and public alike, making use of the opportunity to found her trio. In 2005, she records the album “Bendiciones”, a first taste of her compositional talents, which she aims to fortify with pieces for various instrumentations, including string quartets.
