Cut it! Splice it!

Sonic Arts Network presents some great new music

Sonic Arts Network, an organisation supporting British Experimental Musicians, and the BBC have their minds set on dishing up tasty meal of great new music. The Cut & Splice 2005 claims to be the most ambitious edition of the Festival and carries the title "Dots and Lines". Its aim is to "explore the idea of notation and the relationship between score, image, text and sound in electronic music and sound art." That sounds ambitious indeed but really boils down to one question: What constitutes the musical experience and what kind of transformation takes place when moving from a static to a dynamic (or time based) artform. BBC radio will focus on the events through its weekly show Hear and Now, and there will be online exhibitions, a real-world gallery and, of course, some concerts: Jaap Blonk will perform Kurt Schwitters "Ursonate" and Yasunao Tone will move sounds alongside live-paintings of Chinese Calligraphy. It all starts May 13th and events are taking place until the third of June.
