CD Feature/ "Mozart Classics"

Each season has its music. Spring starts with careful and yet careless sounds full of possibilities. Then there’s the extasy of Summer with its poignantly positive vibes and the sombre solitude of Autumn, reflected by long and slowly treading pieces. Finally, the year closes with the warm and woozy tunes of Winter. “Mozart Classics” fits into that latter category.

Which means that everything’s soft and fluffy here. Don Jackson and the London Symphony Orchestra have created a magical Mozart-world without any rough edges or intellectual constraints: You can have a nice cup of tea here, build a snow man or just dream away. This approach can actually almost be called modern – if you liked Baiba Skrides second Sony-disc, you are going to eat this up. The program concentrates on the romantic side of the composer and consists of a well-balanced mix of excerpts from his Piano Concertos, Symphonies, as well as the Clarinet Concerto and the “Night Music”. There’s no real surprises, but then it’s not the usual bland “Best Of” either. The flow of the album is great and puts the Deutsche Grammophone’s “Yellow Lounge” to shame, so all you aspiring Classical DJs should give this one a listen.

It should also be mentioned that you’ll get a DVD Audio with a complete 5.1. Surround Sound Mix on top of the already excellent Stereo Mix, so HiFi Fanatics shouldn’t complain. “Serious” listeners will reject this record, of course, and call it sentimental. But hey, it’s Winter – it’s alright to be a little sentimental.
