Al Margolis & Denman Maroney: Interpretations at the Roulette table
TobiasThe „hyperrealist“ Piano technique involves many factors at the same time. For one, Denman Maroney uses both the keys of the Piano, as well its body and innards, using bows and slides of metal, plastic and rubber to influence the resonance of its strings. By clever use of „a system of temporal harmony based on the undertone series“, he is able to arrive at improvisations at different tempi at the same time. Influences include Cage, Coleman, Cowell, Ellington, Ives, Joplin, Messiaen, Monk, Nancarrow and Stockhausen – among others, of course.
The „Interpretations“ series is currently in its 19th season. Its main focus is the intricate relationship between a composer and the performing artist: How do they work together, how can they mutually push each other beyond their horizons and what are factors for conflict? Sometimes, they will be the same person and then again, two different personalities. Previous editions have included artists such as Annea Lockwood, Morton Subotnick, Robert Ashley and Pauline Oliveros.
