British Pianist Warren Mailley Smith has announced that he will be giving his Carnegie Hall Debut in April of this year. The program for this special occasion will include works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and the young Chopin. The latter of these three illustrous names has held a special place in Warren Mailley Smith's repertoire for years, clearly marking him as a Chopinist. And yet, he also belongs to the select group of young perfomers paying tribute to the work of greatly underestimated and all but forgotten composer-pianist York Bowen, whom he will be honouring with a rendition of Bowen's Sonata in Bb. To prepare for Carnegie Hall, Warren Mailley Smith will perform the same set in Manchester on January 31st. Despite the high profile nature of these appearances, they are merely two important dates among many others in a packed schedule for 2008, which furthermore includes a London recital in St John’s and sessions in Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham and Cambridge – as well as a cruise on the QM2. Quite obviously, things are going well for Warren Mailley Smith, who has even managed to market his own classical ring tones entirely without the support of a major record company.
All of this is not to say that Warren Mailley Smith has lost contact to his local scenes. „Concerts in Manchester and Birmingham have been great fun and I'm hoping to increase levels of support in these cities over the coming season by further performances there next year.“ Mailley Smith said after his gigs last year and thanked for the praise and constructive criticism he had received. He also announced further albums in the near future: „It has been too long since the last recording session and there should be at least 2 new discs on the way over the next 12-18 months.“ These discs will follow up his debut „Silhouettes“ on Quartz records, which landed him a spot as „Hot Property of the Week“ on influential UK radio station Classic FM. According to Warren Mailley Smith, one of the upcoming discs will feature Chopin's Piano Concerto No 1 and the complete Chopin Rondo.
The career of Warren Mailley Smith has drawn a lot of attention in Britain of late. Mailley Smith gave up on a career as a lawyer in favour of music and was then greeted with open arms by press and public alike. Part of his success can be attributed to his open embrace of the internet and modern technology – practise sessions and concerts are to be broadcast live via his MySpace Account very soon.
