de Spectrum Concerts Berlin: Serious support needed

Frank Dodge, artistic director of Spectrum Concerts Berlin has opened the celebratory 20th anniversay season with an insistent and urgent speach. While Frank Dodge acknowledged the artistic contribution his brainchild has had on the classical music scene of Berlin and shortly reminisced in memories of the “wonderful and unforgettable evenings of music” over the last twenty years, he offered his auditorium two potential future visions of Spectrum Concerts Berlin: Either to achieve planning reliability quickly or give up the project alltogether. The reason for the gloomy prediction was a deficit for the current season. “The only possibility for Spectrum Concerts Berlin to enter a third decade is to secure a sound financial basis immediately.”, Frank Dodge said, “to ensure that the organisors and musicians can keep on planning and working without having to fear the future.” To achieve this basis, Frank Dodge announced that the short-term goal for Spectrum Concerts Berlin was to find the sum of 180.000 Euros in sponsoring money during the 20th season. As a first measure, entrance fees were raised slightly to reduce the deficit.

The short keynote speach was full of energy, yet it hinted at the dangers of Spectrum Concerts Berlin being unable to continue its mission: To provide the public with exciting chamber music from the realms of old music to the 21st century without having to rely on governmental subsidies. When Frank Dodge introduced the idea 20 years ago for the first season of Spectrum Concerts Berlin , this proposition was completely unheard of. Now, the series has managed to attract numerous renowned supporters, including former federal president Richard von Weizäcker. In these two decades of its existence, Spectrum Concerts Berlin has introduced stars such as Janine Jansen to new audiences and built an entire family of artists and fans.

All of this should, however, not distract from the musical pleasure Spectrum Concerts Berlin is about to offer to its visitors over the next year. “On January 22nd, Spectrum Concerts Berlin is going to be exactly 20 years old.”, Frank Dodge said with a fair degree of pride and to mark the occasion, he has compiled a program with all the trademarks which have made Spectrum Concerts Berlin such a success: Richard Strauss, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and a String Septet by young Bulgarian star Dobrinka Tabakova. And on March 22nd, Frank Dodge (who is a Cellist himself) will be joined on stage by Pianist Naomi Niskala for a tribute to composer Robert Helps.
