Surrounded by Sound
TobiasFine German label Raumklang (its name meaning "sourround sound" in English) is offering two fantastic new CDs. First off, the "Georgian Journey"-album by Antchis Chati has finally been made available to the public. Previously available only at this remarkable Choir's live gigs, the Double Disc set features "songs sung during work on the fields, songs celebrating hospitality and songs about love". Almost as exciting as its repertoire is the production of the album: It was recorded in an old church and an empty cimema, using an emergency backup generator. You could call that original recording practice, if you like.
Secondly, there's "Fiesta Espanola", a rather average name for a remarkably extravagant set that blends Flamenco with early baroque music of 16th and 17th Century Spain. Soprano Mercedes Hernandez is the disc's vocal star, which is made even more special and intimate by the dancing-sounds of Elva la Guardia. Further instrumental duties are covered by the "United Continuo Ensemble", a six-piece. founded by Jörg Meder in 1995. Modernism meets Tradition and two different styles clash on this album of extremes.
