us Steve Roach: A Deeper Silence and Landmass slated for release

Ambient icon Steve Roach has announced that his recent “Arc of Passion” set will soon be followed up by two new releases, the titles of which have already been confirmed: “A Deeper Silence” and “Landmass”. Judging from Steve Roach*s first comments on these works, they could hardly be more different, with the former connecting with some of his earliest work and the latter displaying a pronounced affinity for his current preference of eliminating the border between live and studio situations. While it has not yet been reveiled, whether “A Deeper Silence” and “Landmass” will be published on Steve Roach’s own “Timeroom” imprint or on befriended record companies like Projekt or Soleilmoon, they are definitely slated for publication within the next few months – further setting the pace in making 2008 yet another highly productive year for the Arizona-based composer.

All throughout “A Deeper Silence”, there is a clear bond with the title track of Steve Roach’s 1984-album “Structures from Silence”: “It has
the feeling of being aged 24 years from the time of Structures, but
deeper, darker and like a big sigh of time breathing steady and strong.”, Roach noted, “Minimal and infinite in its essence, like all of my long-form zones, ‘A Deeper Silence” is a functional soundworld specifically created to enhance the atmosphere of your personal sanctuary, your living environment and beyond.”

In correlation with his output in the new millenium and Brian Eno’s original Ambient aesthetic, low volume playback is said to increase the impact of “A Deeper Silence”, which has been submitted to the usual high-standard quality control: “It’s been playing in loop mode here within the sleep chamber for the past 4 months, and has passed the test wonderfully.”

“Landmass”, meanwhile, is marked by constantly morphing structures. Recorded live in May of last year, it is a live performance for Star's End radio program hosted by Chuck Van Zyl and falls into the Pre-“Arc of Passion” period. Musically different from that release, “Landmass”, too, was created from material prepared specifically for the occasion. Described as a “surreal shapeshifting adventure, morphing through a constantly altering perspective giving witness to the creation of iconic landscape formations, stone monuments and massive alluvial desert plains, and the occasional pyroclastic flow”, Landmass “transcends the idea of what a live recording can be” according to Steve Roach.

While the street date of “Arc of Passion” has been set for January 29th, it is already available from the sites of Steve Roach and Projekt Records for online orders.
