Steve Roach: Builds an Arc of PassionSteve Roach has announced “Arc of Passion”, a new two-disc set, which is already hailed as a potential classic. Built around three tracks, “Arc of Passion” is said to “weave elements of his three definitive styles into a continuous, evolving flow”. Steve Roach himself describes the style as the “deeper end of my tribal ambient sound” and draws paralells to previous albums like “Proof Positive” and “Mystic Chords”. A striking similarity between the latter and “Arc of Passion” can certainly be seen in the fact that they both feature a string of medium-length tracks alongside a key piece of over an hour. In the case of “Arc of Passion”, that key piece is the title track, which Projekt, the label Steve Roach has worked with intensively since “Lost Pieces” in 1995, describes as follows: “Waves of emotion from intertwining sequencers provide the foundation for the evolving trance patterns that develop into full mesmerizing, passionate form.” Steve Roach has furthermore revealed a few details of the sessions to us.
Talking about “Arc of Passion”, Steve Roach told tokafi: “It was recorded at Analogue Haven in LA, a great shop that is the source for all the analog tools of the trade. I was really more of a studio recording with an audience as I had a few days to set and tweak the sound and set.” The sessions at the “Analogue Haven” were, however, “only the culmination of a three-month long preparatory phase of live concerts and live studio intensives for the album:”
The pilars of development were the Philadelphia Gathering Concert as well as a “twelve-hour, non-stop solo concert in Arozona”. Steve Roach: “Listening to the recordings of the Grace Cathedral concert while driving en route from San Francisco to Southern California, the arc of these three pieces came vividly into focus. This became the core of the set a few days later.”
Slowly, and as Steve Roach mentions, perfectly relaxed, the album took on its definite shape: .”Arc of Passion” is scheduled for release on January 29th, but Sam Rosenthal of Projekt has let it be known that his mail order will have them for sale “in a few weeks”.
In other news, Steve Roach has also announced the release of two albums on his own Timeroom imprint – both with him in the seat of producer. Brian Parnham’s “Mantle” and Nathan Youngblood’s “Asunder” are brooding drone works, with Youngblood leaning more towards the dark and ominous, while Parnham explores the warm and souful aspects of the genre. Expect reviews on all publications mentioned in this article on tokafi very soon.
