Spellbound

With her "Solo Flute from A-Z"-series now having reached the "D", Sharon Bezaly could easily relax and watch the sun go down in a pretty strange position and with her flute in her hand. Instead, she has decided to record a new album. It once again features Kalevi Aho, who by many is considered to be Finland's leading symphonic composer.  Apart from Aho, there's also the flute concerto by Iceland's pride Haukur Tomasson and "The World of Montuagretta" by Christian Lindberg from Sweden. Without having as yet heard a single note of this programme, sounds like it could be one of the suprises of 2005.

In a recent interview, Sharon has talked about the background of her relationship with Aho. She wasn't actually aware of him until she came up with the idea of the "A-Z"-series, a huge project intending to map the world of flute music. She was lacking a protagonist for the very first letter and Bis-boss Robert von Bahr mentioned Aho's name in a phone call. Bezaly trusted this moment of intuition. The first edit of "Solo III" was subsequently sent to many different current composers and had a deep impact. Sofia Gubaidulina, who first claimed she didn't have time for anything up until 2008, suddenly suggested writing a piece and many others followed suit.
