Roam the Hello Clouds: Free Electro-Jazz Textures at ABC Australia
TobiasRoam the Hello Clouds have been a high priority for Scape and the label has extensively praised the group in their unusually emotional press release, which claimed: “Even though you may have heard 10,000+ albums in your life time, every now and then, you come across a piece of music or a band which still surprises you. Discovering such unheard music is every music lover’s ultimate drug. Roam the Hello Clouds convey the excitement that feeling of discovery brings.”
Of course, one has to take this kind of statement with a pinch of salt, but Roam the Hello Clouds do have all the ingredients to justify the hype: Intensely quiet and focussed music at the border of electroacoustic improvisation and experimental Jazz, between sound art, granular collages and bewildering grooviness. While the “Sound Quality” concert focusses on their more textural side, “Near Misses” has the seductive qualities of a wet dream, condensing the different stylistic and emotive poles of its members into alluringly glistening melodies and astrally floating beats.
The breadth and depth of Roam the Hello Cloud’s remarkable fusion is the result of three very personal careers: Laurence Pike has been making a name for himself as one of Australia’s more idiosyncratic drummers, Perth’s Dave Miller fed from living in complete isolation, while Trumpeter Phil Slater has often been compared to Mid-phase Miles Davis.
