de Pole: Steingarten Remixes

German label ~scape is continuing their series of Pole's „Steingarten Remixes“ with the release of two new 12 inch Vinyl discs. „Steingarten Remixes 3“ will feature Shackleton, owner of UK-based outfit Skull Disco alongside „Bristol Dubstep pioneer" Peverelist, while „Steingarten Remixes 4“ is reserved for the underground start-trio of Deadbeat, Ghislain Poirier and Gudrun Gut. Again, each „Steingarten Remixes“ 12 inch will have an individual and special mood. Shackleton's rough and refined technoid dub hall echoes and Peverelist's hypnotic dubadelica are dark and desolate - ~scape label mates Deabeat, however, offer a tropical steel-drum dream, making for a perfect fit with Poirier's marching rhythms and the frostily crackling textures and cool eroticism of Gudrun Gut. The first snippets distributed to the international press revealed a wide range of styles, a great respect for the originals and a burning desire to turn these pieces into self-sufficient compositions in their own right. All Steingarten Remixes will later become available to the CD-buying part of the public, as well as to those too slow or undecided about the Vinyl editions, when the complete bunch is issued as a digipack in November.

This may not sound like a sensation at first, but it does represent quite a bit of a surprise in the case of Stefan Betke. Pole, after all, has been a highly personal project for Betke, a unique vision away from any easy categorisations. The record company has another valid point to make on the subject: „Remixing Pole is a bit of a challenge. Carefully assembled, piece by piece, his seamless ”Steingarten” (rockery) exhibits no gaps, no ornaments, no superfluous flourishes. And a closer look at the tracks’ underlying structure confirms: any additions would only distract from their delicate balance.“ The crew of remixers does a fine job, however, turning „Steingarten Remixes“ into an item to look forward to.

After the somewhat luke-warm reception of Stefan Betke's third, eponymous album on Mute Records, „Steingarten“ saw Pole's return as a media darling early this year.
