Gruenrekorder: Autumn Leaves are falling for freeThe Gruenrekorder label has made its long awaited “Autumn Leaves” compilation available – for free. “Autumn Leaves” follows in the footsteps of "Autumn Leaves: Sound and the Environment in Artistic Practice", a book on various aspects of Field Recordings and environmental sounds. The project arose from a collaboration between Gruenrekorder and Dr. Angus Carlyle, who currently holds a teaching position at the London School of Communications. Gruenrekorder and Carlyle invited respected friends and dear colleagues to share their views on the subject matter and put them into poignant and imaginative essays or photographic series. The result was one of two books which probably did more for the scene than any other publication in 2007 in terms of presenting underlying motivations (the other, of course, being “Extract” on Nonvisual Objects).
Originally, the musical companion to “Autumn Leaves” was going to be part of the book, but for various issues this idea was shed last-minute. With the sampler now available for download from the Gruenrekorder-site, this initial disappointment has now ended up a win-win situation. For anyone who bought the book, these 27 tracks will offer deeper insight and exemplify the thoughts offered while reading. For anyone else, it is an excellent first look into the world of field recordings and adjacent genres. According to Gruenrekorder, “you can hear everything from carefully crafted spoken word pieces, through compelling electro-acoustic compositions, to the purest forms of unedited and unsequenced phonography.”, thus turning it into a perfect introduction.
Contributing artists include Yannick Dauby, Martin Clarke, Zoe Irvine as well as Gruenrekorder label heads Roland Etzin Lasse-Marc Riek. Alongside the music, the artwork is also available freely.
