Glenn Gould: Every single note releasedA humungous box set as well as a string of special productions and re-releases are celebrating the fact that 25 years after his death, legendary Canadian pianist Glenn Gould is more alive than ever. The name of the treasure chest hitting stores in September is “THE COMPLETE ORIGINAL JACKET COLLECTION” and consists of a breathtaking 80 CDs. It collects every single note ever recorded by Glenn Gould, including his very first vinyl offerings and of course his Bach-renditions, which would be considered untouchable for many decades to come (and are still regarded by many as the deepest anyone has ever entered Bach’s mind). Including as well are of course his seminal Goldberg Variations. First pictures of the Complete Original Jacket Collection box look quite promising indeed. Great care has gone into an exact reproduction of the original records’ artwork and even the discs are imitating the golden vinyl look back when the music was first published. The bonus features are also impressive, including one of the last interviews ever conducted with Glenn Gould (by American journalist Tim Page in 1981, a mere year before Gould’s death), as well as a 240 page booklet and the original score written by Gould for George Roy Hill's take on Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse Five”. And if you feel that 80 CDs of music is too much even when it involves Glenn Gould, then the fact that all of them will be available individually as well should comfort you.
Next to the “Complete Original Jacket Collection”, a radio play by Michael Stegemann is diving into the life and times of the pianist. Stegemann has written a respected Glenn Gould-biography and has translated his passion into a three-part production, which will be released both in an English and German language version. Stegemann follows Gould’s life until his Goldberg Variations session in 1955, then deals with that work in depth and analyzes the times which followed the famous 'concert drop-out' in 1964, after which he would never set foot to a stage again and dedicate himself entirely to recording in the studio and preparing for his second career as a conductor. "THE GLENN GOULD TRILOGY" is a production by the German WDR broadcasting agency and probably the most up to date biographical work regarding Glenn Gould at the moment, having been recorded March and June of this year.
Finally, the DVD “Glenn Gould: A Russian Journey” takes one last look at Gould’s visit to the Soviet Untion in 1957 and his thrilled reception there. Several other re-releases are scheduled as well, making September a month of celebration – rather than mourning.
