US-based Cambodian band Dengue Fever have landed a suprising coup by signing a licensing deal for their third album “Venus on Earth” with Peter Gabriel’s Real World label. The deal will mean that Dengue Fever’s music will now effectively be available worldwide, published by Real World in all territories outside of the USA and Canada. “It’s really cool stuff with a small Cambodian singer and big American guys behind!” Peter Gabriel.commented on Dengue Fever in his press announcement “They’re California-based but have taken ‘60’s Cambodian pop as their main source of inspiration and it’s done with style. It’s spirited, impassioned.” The Real World version of “Venus on Earth” will contain additional music to the regular release, including a live radio track of “One Thousand Tears of a Tarantula”, recorded March 3 at World Café from National Public Radio in Philadelphia. The news comes as Dengue Fever are on a tightly scheduled tour through Europe, which includes appearances in Norway, Denmark, England and the Czech Republic.
The unique blend of music of “Venus on Earth” certainly turned Dengue Fever into an instantly recognisable band with an equally summerly and quirky as well as dark and mysterious sound. “World-music albums come and go, but virtually none get handed a fluke editor’s choice pick on Amazon.com and explode the way Dengue Fever did”, critic Eric Saeger wrote in his review of the album on tokafi.com, “winning over many bored critics in the US hipster community in a similarly inexplicable series of events.” Indeed, Dengue Fever have been called “A band to watch” by English newspaper The Guardian, while being mentioned as a potential candidate for future Quentin Tarrantino soundtracks.
Real World are supporting the band and “Venus on Earth” with a remix contest, with visitors to their site able to lay their hands on the track “Tiger Phone Cards”. A Dengue Fever Youtube channel will soon present short films the band have shot over the years. And for the sceptics, there’s the band’s MySpace presence, which offers plenty of music from all of their tree studio albums to check out before buying the record.
