CD Feature/ Nick Grey: "Les Eaux Territoriales"

Unpacking this is already more fun than listening to most other records: “Les Eaux Territoriales” comes in a slim cardbord box, sealed with a paper-wrapper containing a tiny glued-on mirror. After breaking the seal, another layer reveals itself, giving way to a cover with the image of a cow, which holds the actual CD and a folded booklet.

When someone puts so much effort into packaging his album, it must either be a question of love or of covering up his lack of talent. Fortunately, Nick Grey is not just anybody and this EP (or Mini-Album, if you like) follows swiftly in the steps of his already brilliant “Regal Dayligh” full-lenght debut. While that record was picked up by stateart and distributed on a grand scale, “Les Eaux”, a collaboration with guitarist Nicholas Davis, sees him taking a step back to an audience of the few and fortunate – fortunate enough to know this is actually out there. After a wonderously intricate opening, the following two tracks take up the disc’s twentythree minutes with silvery guitar lines, distant drum poundings, warm vocals and chords meandering like a milky stream floating on the bed of the moon. The title track has the kind of groove you can nod your head to when lying alone in your bed at four o’clock in the morning and “Deathships of all flags gather around yr shores”’s backwards-sounds, organ sadness, accordeon-tristesse and subdued voice creaking and humming like the floorboards outside of Arthur Gordon Pyms cabin will have you touched and frightened all at once.

The only thing we are concerned about is this jem’s price: Sold at seven Euros about everywhere on the planet (except for France, where you only pay five and can have a croissant and cafe au lait to go with it), this must have been manufactured by little Chinese hands! But even given that were true, we’re not really concerned: Surely, they had fun packing.
