Bill Laswell & Fanu: Enter the "Lodge" at KarlrecordsKarlrecords have announced the European CD release of an album which has already caused some excitement over in Japan: “Lodge”, the musical meeting between prolific Zen-Dub master Bill Laswell and Finnish Drum n Bass maestro Fanu, is now scheduled for a release on March 28th. The unfettered enthusiasm of label founder Thomas has immediately translated into his press release, in which he speaks about “a psychotic, feverish album bridging the gap between 21st century cutting-edge drum&bass and avant-jazz” and dotes on “Fanu's syncopated rhythms & sharp breaks” as well as “Bill Laswell’s growling, hard-driven bass attacks”. The two tracks in the Karlrecords player over at MySpace certainly promise a work filled with futuristic tension and different worlds meeting at a bizarre point break. The line-up of “Lodge” is completed by two of today’s leading experimental Jazz Trumpetists, Nils Petter Molvaer and Graham Haynes, as well as keyboard player Bernie Worrell. Preorders are already being taken.
This essentially turns “Lodge” into a meeting of different generations: Experienced allrounder Bill Laswell meets the young dog Fanu (with still only a single solo album to his credit), 63-year old Bernie Worrell teams up with the contemporary top of the crop Molvaer and Haynes and Dub crashes into Jazz and edgey electronica.
If there is one thing missing from this encounter it is good old Vinyl. Thomas: “Sorry, but due to restrictions on how to handle the vinyl version we at Karlrecords decided not to press LPs of this release at all.” Other than that, the vision of Bill Laswell and Fanu looks set to conquer Europe the same way it did Japan.
