Bass Communion: Molotov and Haze Live in MexicoNow his triumphant Micro-tour with No Man is over, Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson is returning to his Bass Communion moniker for a 2 record twin release. „Molotov and Haze“, on the one hand, sees Wilson in a state of blistering bipolarity, veering between romantic guitarscapes and aggressively abrasive textures with a high degree of noise. While deep monstrosities like „Corrosive 1702“ create suffocating claustrophonies of surreal visuality, 23-minute „Haze 1402“ will bring tears to the eyes of every righteous lover of pure, tranquil dronework. Even though „Molotov and Haze“ will be published as a regular CD on Important Records, the artwork once again confirms the label as one of the few outfits who treat the format with dignity: Packaged in a „deluxe tip-on style heavy duty gatefold jacket with the cd slipped into a Japanese inner bag“ and with renowned artist Carl Glover taking on design duties, the album is sure to draw attention on the strengths of its looks alone.
The same can be said about the Vinyl release „Live in Mexico“. Teaming up with improvisational Noise collective Pig (Andres Solis – turntables, Rogelio Sosa – voice, Daniel Goldaracena - device), the record catches Wilson on Guitar and Laptop on a joint performance from February of this year at the laboratorio de arte alameda in Mexico City. While „Molotov and Haze“ has officially been billed as the regular eighth Bass Communion album, „Live in Mexico“ is the appreciative accompanying collector's item. Limited to 500 copies, it will be pressed in five different colour-sets, with sales being limited to a single copy per customer. Even so, Important could not guarantee everyone to get what they wanted: „Please list your 3 favorite colors and we'll try to make sure you get one of your favorites.“
As productive as the doublestrike of „Molotov and Haze“ and „Live in Mexico“ may seem, it is merely the consequential continuation of an already astoundingly busy year for Bass Communion, which has up to now included the luxurious CD/5.1 DVD package „Pacific Codex“ and a collaboration with Frans de Waard's Freiband project on Mini-CD „Haze Shrapnel“.
