Voces8: 'Evensong' makes surprise bid for Christmas chart success
Tobias„Evensong“ is not just a promising tune in its own right, but also the opening track and first single to be taken off Voces8's third, homonymous full-length. Accompanied by a humurously self-depricating video, it is also the logical culmination of a journey which has seen them gather numerous awards at home and abroad and establish an upbeat and energetic program of choral transcriptions of popular songs. „Evensong“, too, contains various radio smash hits like „Jailhouse Rock“ (grooving on vocal bass lines and drum imitations), blending them with some of the great melodies of the Classical repertoire, such as the chorus to Händel's „Hallelujah“. The album follows in the wake of two succesful predecessors, including ‘From Gibbons to Gershwin’, which Voces8 refer to as „an eclectic mix of music from the last 500 years“.
The release of „Evensong“ comes just under two months after the triumphant debut of Voces8 at Wigmore hall, performing with a line-up of internationally acclaimed colleagues and highlighting music by composer Ronald Corp, some of which has been published on the „Forever Child“ CD.
