us Taylor Deupree: Sea Last lasts only 238 copies

Considered by himself as “one of the most important things I’ve done”, Taylor Deupree is releasing “Sea Last”, a limited audiovisual project of highly personal dimensions. Comprising a book of 238 photographies as well as 19-minute piece of music (written as recently as June of this year) on an accompanying 3’’ Mini-CD, “Sea Last” captures the essence of Deupree’s work in a multimedial meditation on time and memories. “Sea Last was inspired by the stillness and timelessness of the ocean”, he elucidates, “The photographs were taken on a beach in Venice, Florida that I have been visiting every year of my life since I was born. The place is intensely familiar to me, yet the tides and power of the ocean change the landscape every year. It is always the same, yet constantly changing. I am drawn by the early mornings, the emptiness of the beach, and the quiet water, and often use this time for creative inspiration.” At the heart of “Sea Last” are 238 images carefully selected by Deupree in a minute and time-consuming preparational process. In accordance with these pictures, there will be a strictly limited quantity of 238 copies of the book available, each one containing a different blank page and containing the original for that page in a sleeve. This will effectively render each item completely original and unique.

“Because all of the original photographs will be dispersed throughout the world, this book also serves as a document of the complete project”, Taylor Deupree further explained the ideas behind “Sea Last”, “The images are presented chronologically, in the order in which they were taken, between April 24 and 28, 2008.” He also stressed the spontaneous nature of the underlying imagery, despite the work gone into the project: “For the photography, I wanted to use a low-quality camera, in this case a plastic Holga with a Polaroid back, whose idiosyncrasies and “faults” add an element of randomness and decay to the imagery, mimicking the erosion of time and memory. Additionally, the scanning of the photographs brought out flaws on the surface, such as dust and streaked chemical developer, which I made a point of not completely removing, so that the process of digitizing added an additional layer of imperfection and unpredictability. Of the roughly 300 sheets of film I shot, there were 238 images that I deemed usable.”
“Sea Last” can be preordered from the 12k website for  $150, including postage and packaging starting September 2nd.
