This may be one of the best things we've found on the Internet: The string
quartet is possibly the most important classical form of the second half of
the 20th Century when it comes to newly commissioned compositions and its
appeal to both a select crowd and a wider public. That's why we were so
pleased to discover that there's an organisation that is actively trying to
push this form and constantly strive for new ways to promote it. The "London
String Quartet Foundation" helps young, talented ensembles, supports
concerts in London and has created a comprehensive WebSite. They also
organise a one-week celebration of the string quartet, which this year has
started on April 3rd and will end at April 8th. Part of the programme are a
competition, children's specials, masterclasses and concerts, including one
by the Wihan Quartet, who snatched the trophy in 1991. And if you are
interested in taking part, things are already getting on their way for next
year's event.
