de Goebel trashes Gardiner, Koopmans

Musica Antiqua leader speaks his mind

While performing at the "Psalm"-Festival at Graz, conductor and violinist Reinhard Goebel used the opportunity to hit hard at some collegues of his. While he maintained there could be nothing but praise for Nikolaus Harnoncourt, he answered a question regarding John Elliott Gardiner and Ton Koopmans with strong words: "They just never get enough. They believe that the world needs to know about every single one of their farts." He suggested to practise before going into a recording session and claimed he "would never get it into my head to record all Bach Cantatas in one year." (a stab at Gardiners Cantata project which cost him his job at the Deutsche Grammophone, see earlier story). The only reason he stayed at the Deutsche Grammophone for such a long period of time (more than 25 years now) was their internationalism - apart from that, the time record companies mattered, was over.
