Arvo Pärt is taking over the Netherlands as the organisors of the Holland Festival have arranged for five nights of the composer's music. The idea of the festival is as simple as it is constructive: Present the best from Ballet, Theatre, Music and the Movies and have the artists/writers/directors come in for an hour's worth of talk and discussion beforehand. For a total of three weeks, Amsterdam is turned into even more of a cultural cradle as it already is.

The Pärt connection is a natural one, as the Netherlands have a long and deep relationship with him, with CDs regularly taking top chart positions and just as many live concerts taking place. Still, these five nights in Amsterdam are something special, as they will be conducted by Paul Hillier and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Not only have they been responsible for some of the finest Vocal CDs of the last few years ("The Powers of Heaven" on harmonia mundi was sheer delight), but they were also the apple of Pärts eye, who wrote some compositions especially with them and their sound in mind. Now is the chance to listen to some of these live: "Miserere" on June 7th, "Stabat Mater" in June 8th, "Como Cierva Sedienta" on June 9th, "Kanon Pokajanen" on June 10th and an as yet unspecified event with Alexander Knaifel on the 18th.
