england Nightmares on Wax: Who would have thought so?

Nightmares on Wax are back with their latest studio album on Warp Records. Now the label’s longest-serving artist, George Evelyn is once again presenting a contemporary update on his recognisable vision of HipHop, Soul and Breakbeat on what amounts to his sixth full length. Thanks to its lightningspeed production time especially, “Thought so...” has turned out a fluent and coherent effort, replete with sunlit textures and juicy grooves. “Very,Very exciting times ahead”, Evelyn promised on the revamped Nightmares on Wax website, “After spending much of 07 focusing on the global launch of(the N.O.W label) Wax on records(www.waxonrecords.com) and the release of our first long player “Le Bienheueruex” by Guts… 07 brings one word to mind for the future “PROLIFIC” and then some….. This has in no way effected the release of the new N.O.W long player ,Why do we say this? Because the new N.O.W album was written in Sept 06!!!! On a road trip from Leeds to Ibiza!!! In 10 days!!!! This co-insided with my uprooting from my homebase in Leeds to my new found home here in Ibiza!”

As always, “Thought so...” will split audiences straight in the middle, with some claiming that Nightmares on Wax are simply repeating the same old formula first served on their classic “Smoker’s Delight” album in the mid-90s. First impressions on the album both confirm and contradict this theory. “Hear in Colour” rides on a smooth HipHop bounce, softy propelled by dreamy melodic swirls and tantra-like looped vibes. With its stoic slow-motion, the track seems a logical continuation of Evelyn’s proven “Car Boot Sale” formula. “195lbs”, however, injects splintered electro quotes into the project’s veins, while “Be There”, too, leans more towards dark and foreboding dub.

All throughout, Reggae influences are rearing their sunny heads, which lends “Thought so...” a simultaneously sharp and relaxed touch. The album will be available on Warp from 26th of August, preceded by a launch party in Ibiza a week earlier. You can sample extracts and several full tracks from the Nightmares on Wax MySpace site.
