Nicola Benedetti: How to make Classical Music popular

Nicola Benedetti’s debut had been released by the Deutsche Grammophon as part of a deal over six records and gathered her a lot of respect. The rumours about her earning a million pound thanks to her contract did lead to a lot of speculation about the marketing department trying to turn her into something of a crossover star – a sentiment mirrored by the absurd claim that she was the “Classical Britney”. With her second album, she proved to be an artist on the look for uncompromising programs, juxtaposing Mozart with Mendelssohn and her compatriot James MacMillan – not only the most eminent Scottish composer of his generation, but also the most controversial. If the pieces mentioned in the first paragraph should indeed be included on her her third album, this would in fact beher first step into slightly more popular territory.

Not that Nicola Benedetti would give too much a thought about that. In a recent interview for NECN, she ridiculed people who considered her interpretations less valuable, simply because they were popular. Her biggest goals remained attracting audiences to classical music and to further this by regular visits to schools and playing in front of young audiences. She showed strong determination to reach these goals by using nothing but her musical talent: “The things that I’m most ambitious about are the things I can acchieve with my playing.”
