Netrebko admits crisis

img

One of our favourite questions is whether we are experiencing a crisis of classical music. Anna Netrebko, who should, by the looks of it, be a perfect example of the enthusiasm this music can still evoke, has now openly discussed the problems of the scene. She insisted that she was hardly ever touched by what she saw and heard at the Opera, calling performances "dusty" and "old fashioned". She felt that it would take some imagination in order to present classical works to a modern audience in a credible and convincing manner. Netrebko furthermore stated that she sometimes felt torn apart between two needs: The marketing and public relations aspect of her job and the singing itself.

All of this was said during preparations to Netrebkos guest appearance at the Köln arena, where she will sing to a possible audience of 18.000 (tickets were, however, still available).
