Mayuko Kamio: Plays exclusively for Sony BMG

Japanese Violinist Mayuko Kamio has signed an exclusive recording contract with Sony BMG Masterworks. To both sides, this presents a lot of interesting perspectives, with work on the debut release due to start in March of this year. In her statement, Mayuki Kamio stressed the possibility of reaching international audiences: thanks to the deal: "I am very pleased and excited about the wonderful contract opportunity with SONY BMG Masterworks, enabling me to record my performances for a worldwide audience." From the company’s point of view, Mayuko Kamio is simply one of the biggest talents on the scene with already a remarkable record of collaborations and awards. As Cris Craker, head of Sony BMG International put it: "Naturally, we are all very excited to be working with Mayuko Kamio. She has just won the Tchaikovsky Competition and performed in Munich with Zubin Mehta, where I was delighted to witness a unanimous standing ovation for her performance. Mayuko will undoubtedly be one of the most inspired and gifted violinists on the international concert circuit and we are very proud to be working with her.” A tentative release date for Mayuko Kamio’s first album has been set for October of 2008.

Still only 22, Mayuko Kamio has already worked with the likes of Zubin Mehta and scored a first prize at the Menuhin International Violin Competition. Only twelve years old at the time, she was the youngest artist ever to win the award. Her real breakthrough, however, came in June of 2007, when she triumphed at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. As a direct result, Kamio saw her bank account swell by $40,000 in cash and she received an invitation by Vladimir Spivakov to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with the Russian National Orchestra. With a delay of half a year, that victory now also got her in contact with a major record company.

The way things look right now, Mayuko Kamio is playing anything but safe for her upcoming debut. Mixing Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Waxman and Szymanowski, in fact, it sounds like a daring proposition. Here’s the envisioned track list, as provided by Sony BMG Masterworks:

Szymanowski: Mity – 3 Poematy, Op.30
Waxman: Carmen Fantasy
Tchaikovsky: Valse-scherzo, Op.34
Tchaikovsky: Meditation, Op.42, No.1 from Souvenir d’un lieu cher Op.42
Stravinsky: Suite italienne
Chausson: Poème
