Mauricio Sotelo: Wall of Light offers audiovisual Silence

Mauricio Sotelo is one of the first artists to be featured on Kairos Music's new series on contemporary Spanish composition. His new CD „Wall of Light“ documents his interest in the relationship between the visual and the acoustic. A tribute to Dublin-born American painter Sean Scully, the album collects a total of four medium-length pieces inspired by Scully's homonymous series: „Chalan“ (2003) featuring Indian Percussionist Trilok Gurtu and the musikFabrik, „Como Llora el Agua“ (2008), a solo piece for Flamenco Guitar performed by Juan Manuel Cañizares, the title piece for Saxophonist Marcus Weiss as well as 2007's „Night“, in which the musikFabrik enters a dialogue with Percussionist Miquel Bernat. “What interests me most about Sean Scully’s painting is the process of its creation, the path to the finished picture, the manual method, how thin layers of various pigments are laid one over the other, which – arranged with an almost mystic severity – through transparency become visible again and exhibit unique, unusual emotional tones of great depth“, Mauricio Sotelo explained his fascination, „It is certainly the clarity of the composition through which the light is liberated from material bonds and which can come to light as oscillations of air, and respectively ultimately as music.”
