Franui: Brahms Volkslieder celebrate the Tragic and the Triumphant
Tobias“Brahms – Volkslieder” therefore again employs the winning formula Franui had chosen for their previous endeavour, continuing the relationship with Austrian label Col Legno. Even though the tight harmonies of the group reveal their local roots, the pussyfootingly dancing rhythms and complex classical chord progressions lift the music to a new plain. Both heavenly plaintive and upliftingly romantic, pieces like the consoling “Dort hoch auf jenem Berge” (“High up on yonder Mountain”) or the long and winding “Komm Du Mein Liebchen, Komm!”, celebrate the tragic and the triumphant, the whimsical and the woozy to in a mutually complementary marriage on a surreal village fair – just listen to the tragically muted “Bolero”, which Franui perform as if tangled up in a sad and silent dream and you’ll understand straight away.
As one can easily imagine, this kind of exultant energy is best enjoyed life and for anyone interested in seeing Franui in concert, you can do so at the Mozarteum Salzburg between December 18th and 21st, when the group is slated to perform on the same bill with Gustav Kuhn and the Haydn Orchester (who have only just published their recording of all four Brahms symphonies).
As if that weren’t enough, Franui are currently also working on a project which should keep them busy for quite some time: „Anaesthesia”, a Pasticcio-opera in honour of Händel’s 250th anniversary.
