Fantastic Frederieke

The Long Thibaud competition has often been dubbed the second most important concours for up and coming talents, closely behind the Koningin Elisabeth Concours. So, if this year's results are anything to go by, Frederieke Saeijs must be one of the violin masters of the future, as she walked home with 45.000 Euros and a total of four individual prizes.

Actually, we had been suspecting as much when we witnessed her rendition of the Berg Violin Concert in The Hague about a year ago, the same piece that won her the honours in Paris. Apart from a sympathetic and powerful stage appearance, she displayed a marked love for the quiet tones and moved the audience most when she performed a solo encore. The Hague was also the place where it all started, when she was admitted to the Royal Conservatory in 1998 as a member of the "Class for young talented musicians". A bachelors- and a masters diploma followed, as did a string of awards at several competitions. Instead of following this up with the usual touring- and recording schedule, Saeijs took a brave and difficult decision: She cancelled all concerts for 2005, moved to Bloomington and started studying with Mauricio Fuks (a former succesful soloist as well). The hard work seems to have payed of and has gained her the admiration of professionals and fellow students alike: She won both the priz awarded by the Orchestre Nationale de Paris and the distinction of the Paris Conservatory pupils.

Now the public is waiting for her, it's a most welcome piece of news that Saeijs will end her live hiatus pretty soon. The Paris success story has already gained her a couple of recitals all over the world next year and she is already booked as a soloist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006. So keep your eyes (and ears) ope for Frederieke and find out for yourself what those Frenchmen were so enthousiastic about.
