Eyes and Ears: A painter, a drummer and a guitarist meetCrouton label boss and percussionist Jon Muller and Australian guitarist Tim Catlin have invited painter Thomas Kovacic to contribute the artwork to their combined effort “Plates and Wires”. The result is a three-way collaboration featuring a 10x10" package adorned by Kovacevic’s recognisable style described by Crouton as “dragging paint with devices over large planks of disused furniture”. What they also claim is that Kovacic has been able to create a connection between the audible and the optical by establishing “a visual cohesion with the layers and chunks of milky and gritty sounds heard within the recording."
John Muller comments on “Plates and Wires” as follows: “Having learned about Tom’s work, and having just spent the past year working on recordings with Tim, I felt that there was a connection between how each of us worked; in developing layers, and the unknown results that are produced in these direct combinations.” This may at first sound strange to untrained ears, as all prints seem to have the exact same qualities. Kovacevich explains: “Each print is inked and printed or struck by hand resulting in slight tonal differences” – making each one unique in its own right.
For those who can’t get enough of the regular edition of “Plates and Wires”, there is also a special version featuring a signed print by Thomas Kovacevich. The difference in prize is obvious, but not as absurd as with comparible projects in the past: 40$ vs. 15$.
