Extract: A panopticum of the minimal sceneThere is so much of their music to be heard, but so little to be read about experimental artists. This disparity is now being tackled by a book courtesy of the Non Visual Objects label lead by Raphael Moser and Heribert Friedl. “Extract” features 22 artists from the world of quiet and minimal sounds on 96 pages and presents them in the form of interviews, short essays, photos or drawings. The latter two categories were introduced since some of the artists involved do not exclusively deal with music (and Moser is a graphic designer himself). As a direct result, the book is both a work of art and a first panopticum for a scene which has fed off the imagination of the listern just a little too much in the past.
Moser and Friedl are certainly the right duo to act as curators to “Extract”. “Nonvisual Objects”, which took up operations in 2005 as a homebase for their own projects, has developed into a melting pot for “interpretations of minimalism in sound”. Subsequently, a sort of community has formed around them, which the book sets out to explore in more depth. While personal tastes and a proxmity to the record company’s aesthetics will surely have played a role in the selection process, it was an important goal to display the scene in all of its diversity: “We would like to present artists that work in different areas in this field of electroacoustic music, to cover a large spectrum even in this quite specific area.“
