ru Evgeny Kissin: Complete Piano Concertos as Easy as Pie

Evgeny Kissin has realised a personally seminal project by recording all Beethoven Piano concertos. Described as a further milestone in their relationship, EMI Classics will release a three-CD Boxset containing the five Concertos performed by Kissin and the London Symphony Orchestra under the batton of Sir Colin Davis, as well as making these pieces available as a digital download. The thought of documenting his passion for the music has crossed his mind several times over the past years, but only now did the occasion seem just right for Evgeny Kissin. “Recording with Evgeny Kissin and Sir Colin Davis was a wonderful experience”, producer Jay Saks confirms the all-round positive impressions of the studio encounter, “Their interpretation was amazingly accomplished, extremely musical and entirely in the character of Beethoven. As a producer, I had to remind myself time and again that I was sitting here on professional terms. Such is the overwhelming impact of his playing that you forget everything around you. This Beethoven is breathtaking.” The Boxset will be released on On September 19th.

In a short promotional clip, featured on the EMI website, Saks referred to the combination as being “wonderful” and had nothing but wonderful memories of the sessions at London’s Abbey Road studios. “I’ve never worked with a Pianist, or an instrumentalist for that matter, who has such incredible musicianship and beauty of conception and technical perfection”, Saks complimented Evgeny Kissin, “It’s an astonishing combination. He really is extraordinary.” In the same movie, Vladimir Ashkenazy described Kissin’s “total and fanatical devotion” as a prerequisite for being able to “do what he wants to do”.

Sir Colin Davis, meanwhile, had some enlightning background stories on offer. Reading them back, the process of recording these Beethoven Piano Concertos comes across as easy as pie: “It was just a question of a few ensemble problems. The system was that we played each movement three times. And if then there were any tiny things that needed to be corrected we would do that.”
