Catch those eels!

Mirko Uhlig could certainly have made things easier for himself: Firstly, by embarking on his musical journeys under a different name than aalfang mit pferdekopf, which is already a rather unusual title in his native Germany (it means catching eels with a horse's head and refers to a passage from nobel-prize winner Günther Grass' book "Die Blechtrommel") and quite impossible to pronounce for anyone else. Then there's the titles of his tracks, which are longer than the entire lyrics on some pop records. Add to that the fact that the band's line-up is different each time around and that tracks can both be just under a minute long or take up three-quarters of an hour.

But most imprtantly, there's the music, which is already splitting the community. Is this just a bunch of weird sounds or was 2005 truly "the year of the eel" (as one WebZine put it)? It's time to find out for yourself! "Ich habe nur noch 12 Seepferdchen in meinem Tempel" ("There's only 12 Seahorses left in my temple"), Mirko's highly contended throw at early Krautrock and musical peach blossoms, is still available at einzeleinheit records and offers a great insight into the diverse and mashed-up workings of his brain. Then there's "Genmaicha: At the Opal Seashore", a truly wonderful drone album consisting of two floating tracks both of about twenty minutes' length. Mystery Sea will be the label to release this quiet treasure and first copies are expected to ship in only a few days. Mirko will also be presenting one of those lovely mini-CDs on French label taalem and co-operate with famous outfit Drone Records on a late 2005-album.
And slowly but surely, the live scene is waking up to aalfang as well. First concerts are to take place on October 4th at Cologne (in the great Kulturbunker) and October 21st in Berlin (destination: Sibirische Zelle, a club owned by musician Robert Schalinski).

The funny thing, really, is that Mirko never intended his music to be complicated or art for arts sake. There's never too much intellect involved and for those who can listen, there's plenty of beauty, melody and harmony around. A good way to start is to listen to the free track on our very own download-compilation. Go catch those eels!
