Asher Thal-Nir: the depths, the colors &... a new album

There were always different layers of association in his music, so noone should really be surprised that Asher should be releasing with the Belgian “Mystery Sea” label. Over the last year and a half, Asher Thal-Nir has turned into something of a critic’s darling. Quite a few of the bigger names in the world of experimental music have openly expressed therir admiration for the minimally flowing, mysterious and consoling sounds of this Summerville, Massachusettess - based composer and we’ve been happy to chime in. The way it looks, “the depths, the colors, the objects & the silence” will solidify his position.

This despite the fact that the album is slightly closer to “directions”, his 2006-release on purist Swiss “leeraum records” than to the more “musical” outing “landscapes elsewehere” and does therefore not immediately continue the line towards more melody and harmony. On the other hand, even the one minute mp3 snippets of tracks like “partly framed in sunlight” or “the blue gently linked” already suggest that Asher Thal Nis has again created a dense composition of great depth and the illusion of three-dimensionality.

As has become customary with Daniel Crokaert’s record company, there is a short introduction to the new release and this time, it comes courtesy of Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet hailed as one of the 20th century greatest and a brother in mind of Pablo Neruda – and proves that Asher is not a cool analytical mind, despite his inclusion in a genre which might suggest so, but rather striving for expressing himself lyrically with unusual means. Expect "the depths, the colors, the objects & the silence" to bring him one step closer to attaining that goal.
