Richard Betts "Bluffers Guide to Classical Music" is a classic. At the same time wittingly written and comprehensive, this series of seven articles aims to inform starters in the field of Classical music and offer an interesting, often humoruos and always entertaining outlook on all relevant epoches and composers. Betts offers historical perspectives, some gossip (Brahms passion for Clara Schumann), CD-recomendations and some great quips. Like this one: "Beethoven was famously a grumpy sod. But then you would be if you'd written several of the greatest works in musical history and were never able to hear them."
We will start the series this monday and would like to thank Megan Johnson and all at Thread, New Zealand's Fashion-Culture Magazine, who originally printed the articles, for their support. It will be the first of a number of "specials" aiming to provide you with in-depth coverage on current issues and general topics.
