15 Questions to Maxim Rysanov
TobiasHello, I am fine, thanks! I am in London at the moment.
What’s on your schedule right now?
Well, I just got back from Eastern Europe, was there for a while. Had concerts in Moscow, St Petersburg, Riga and Kyiv. The soonest thing now will be playing with Victoria Mulova. Its a UK and Portugal tour. Then I am off to Julian and Friends Festival in Bergen, then Basel, Ferrara etc.
Your concert at Spectrum is up on June 14th. Anxious to get up on stage and play already?
Absolutely!!! Looking very much forward to that!!!
Would you say you feel part of a “Spectrum Family”?
I have so far done only one concert with them and immediately felt as a part of it!
A question in the same vein: Do you feel it to be important to not only share a common musical understanding with your on-stage partners, but also to get along on a personal level?
Absolutely! Its very important to have a good personal contact. Never the less, it is not always the case and it could and should work if there is enough respect between musicians. But this would not be the case of Spectrum! There are great musicians there and fantastic people!
What’s your relationship to Chamber Music in general? Would you agree that it may well be regarded as one of the most contemporary forms of music?
My relationship with chamber music is very good, (I hope J) Its like have a musical party. Lots of comunication!
What’s your view on the classical music scene at present? Is there a crisis?
The only think I can say that I want to live to see what is going to happen to it in 20 or 30 years. I can’t say there is crisis now because music is still needed. It just might change it’s shape with years... I don’t know.
Some feel there is no need to record classical music any more, that it’s all been done before. What do you tell them?
I say, there will be always new geniuses in composition and performance and we will want to know about them. Again, it probably will be done some other way rather then just a cd recording. Its like with LP. Its gone now. And CDs will go soon enough.
What constitutes a good live performance in your opinion? What’s your approach to performing on stage?
Combination in the performer of: at least a try out to understanding of what composer wanted and a conviction of interpretation. That should do it.
What does the word “interpretation” mean to you?
Its like a detective. You search and search for detail, then try to put it together chain by chain and then you have to present it to the jury and convict them of your correctness.
True or false: It is the duty of an artist to put his personal emotions into the music he plays.
True!
True or false: People need to be educated about classical music, before they can really appreciate it.
50/50. I don’t think it is necessary. If there is magic in performance – audience might not understand what is happening on stage, but they will love it on an intuitional level.
Have you ever tried playing a different instrument? If yes, how good were you at it?
Sure. Piano. I used to compose Pop Ballades and accompany myself on the piano when I sang them. J I don’t know, Are we counting the Conducting Baton? Because that works quite well for me as well, some people think.
