Celer: Love and Quietude.

Triumph and tragedy of a Drone duo.

The duo of Danielle Baquet-Long and Will Long were more than just a highly talented Ambient-act. Composed of finely-woven drones, discreet field recordings and the gently-distilled harmonics of acoustic instruments, their music was poetry expressing itself through sound. Their rise from self-produced print runs to acclaimed releases with some of the most renowned labels of the Drone- and Ambient-scene solely took place on the strength of their imagination and without any kind of big marketing ploys. 36 full-lengths within five years are testimony to an endless urge to create and their unfaltering faith in a neverending well of inspiration originating in their love for each other. Celer were also a symbol for all who, in their heart of hearts, still hoped one could build a „career“ as an artist without sacrificing ones ideals. The untimely passing of Danielle on July 8th as the result of a heart failure put an end to this vision. In this special, we take a look back at the duo's gradual ascension, their constantly changing compositional approaches and at highlights from their proliferously burgeoning discography, which will continue to grow beyond the tragic events: About 25 as yet unpublished Celer releases are still planned in the future.

Celer Special Part 3: Standing the Test of Time

Maintaining a fragile balance: Their most accomplished and important work was yet to come.

A brief Celer Discography
Several of these albums are sure to stand the test of time and all of them are marked by distinct ambiances. „Discourses of the Withered“ (Infraction Records) is their romantic masterwork, a nocturnal fantasy of longing and yearning dominated by Danielle's deep, sonorous strings and a pervasive, consoling sensation of great calm and breath. Again, Basinski is an obvious reference, if only for the oceanic wideness of the work. But while the latter's oeuvre tends to feed from the way the essentially invariable material confoundingly changes in the perception of the listener, the long laments on „Discourses“ mutually reinforce each other, like mulling over the same ...

Celer Special Part 2: Discovering the Recipe

You are what you feel: Celer were tireless experimenters in terms of their methodology.

Intentions start to shine through
The Celer discography grew in sync with their honed craftsmanship and gradually, their intentions shone through ever-more clearly. Like Danielle's favourite poet Patchen would experiment with the inclusion of visual elements, Dani and Will would search for a unison between acoustic phenomena and lyrics, even if their music preferred the silent spaces behind the words over hands-down statements. Instead, introductory notes would provide for lyrical gateways and intuitive guidance. „Neon“, for example, carried an inscription by Baquet-Long containing a coded reference to the process at the heart of the recording, which involved the use of sensors and pulsing light:

A distrait table,

Celer Special Part 1: Stepping out of the Cocoon

Hidden Messages and Open Confessions: A complete innocence of working for a public marked their early releases.

To Danielle Baquet-Long and William Long, nothing was more sacred than the arts. And yet, creating music was also a perfectly quotidian activity to them, a spiritual necessity as self-evident and natural as saying „I love you“. In their Huntington Beach-based home-studio, they would spend hours in front of their laptops doing just that: Telling the other they loved him more than anything in the world through sound, playfully leaving hidden messages and open confessions in the acoustic bottles drifting on the waves of their boundless tonal oceans. Music, to them, was a gift they would present to each other every day. It was also a way of following up ...
