Welsh mezzo Katherine Jenkins has spoken out against crossing over into pop
territory in a recent interview. For one thing, she felt it would hurt her
Classical training, and secondly she just wasn't moved by it in the same way
as with classical music. We leave it up to you, whether "O Sole Mio" or
"You'll never walk alone" (featured on her most recent album) are still
Classical. Jenkins also had an explanation at hand for the current surge in
Welsh singers to international fame (Bryn Terfel, Charlotte Church are two
other household names): Welsh is very melodic and based on vowels, like
Italian, making singing easier. Finally, she pointed out her favourite Opera
roles for the near future: Carmen, Cherubino ("Le Nozze di Figaro") and
Dorabella ("Cosi Fan Tutte").
Jenkins' latest CD will now be released in the US, under the strange title
of "La Diva" (which, exactly, she isn't) with a different track
listing and three pieces less than the European release - ask the marketing
department about that, please.
