Metzmacher goes to Berlin

Just a few days ago, we reported about Ingo Metzmacher's career in Hamburg and the outstanding contribution to that city's Classical and Modern Music scene. Now, with his contract over and done with, Metzmacher has found a most welcome invitation into the nation's capital: Dr. Matthias Sträßner, leader of the commission in charge for finding an heir to Kent Nagano at the "Deutsche Symphonieorchester Berlin" announced their intention of employing him just a few days ago. The commission expects Metzmacher to take the ensemble yet one step further, emphasising the conductor's eclectic repertoire and their willingness to reflect this in their upcoming programme. Ingo has reacted to this announcement with modesty ("I feel honoured") and with enthusiasm ("I am already looking forward to working with the Orchestra and to the exciting situation in Berlin"). We take that for a "Yes" then. Still, don't get too worked-up yet: The contract starts in the 2007/2008 season and the first of at least three years will be spent both in Berlin and Amsterdam, where he also holds the position of first conductor.
