nl Edison Edition 2005

The Dutch have decided on their favourites

The Edison is the Prize awarded to outstanding albums by the Dutch recording industry since 1960. On May 2nd, the winners for this year were announced during a special event held at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. And the Edisons go to:

  • Chamber Music: Bela Bartók: Violin Sonatas
Christian Tetzlaff, Leif Ove Andsnes (They were called "perfect guides" through Bartoks uncompromising works)
  • Voice solo: Italian Opera Arias
Rolando Villazón (The jury praised not only his multilayered voice, but also his theatrical imagination)
  • Concertos: Sergei Rachmaninov: Piano Concertos nos. 1&2
Krystian Zimerman (Not only a technically superb rendition of a well-known classic, but also an interpretation that manages to unveil the highly personal background story to it)
  • Contemporary Music: Elliott Carter: What Next?
Paul Griffiths, Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra o.l.v. Peter Eötvös (A piece depicting humour, lyricism and an incredible vitality)
  • Medieval Music and Renaissance: Roland de Lassus: Il Canzoniere di Messer Francesco Petrarca
Heulgas-Ensemble, Paul van Nevel (The jury were impressed by the "strange attraction" of this recording and praised the natural playing of the musicians as well as the excellent production)
  • DVD: Guiseppe Verdi: Tosca’s Kiss
Sara Scuderi, Cambridge Theatre Orchestra/Alberto Erede (A documentary from 1984 on a house founded by Verdi, providing a home to elder Opera singers)

These are just some of the categories, check out the Edison-homepage for more information (albeit in Dutch only).

Violinist Janine Jansen received the Audience's Choice Award. This marks the second time the Dutch have voted their compatriate to the top of this category.
