There are great guitarists and then there is Robert Fripp. While those in the first category either startle us with their technical virtuosity or move us with delicate sensibility, both very earthly pleasures, the latter has made it his aim to bring spirituality back to guitar-playing. His recordings with Brian Eno and his solo albums were fragile, devoid of any reference and unusual to say the least. So were his methods - his very own school, Guitar Craft, puts the emphasis on "developing a personal presence, the space around us, and our relationship between the two" and uses "silence" as one of its principles. Because music needs to be heard however, after all, the school regularly leaves town with some of its best scholars and performs live all over the world. What is so remarkable about their concerts is that by the use of a special technique, New Standard Tuning, the range of sounds that can be produced is drastically increased and allows the rendition of material that would usually require more and different instruments. America and Europe have both been enthusiastic about the "League of Crafty Guitarist", as the tour band likes to call itself, but Germany has been especially open - memories still go out to a sold-out concert in Dresden 2002. Now, you'll get second chance to catch this fantastic ensemble on stage - and be sure that live the pleasures will be both spiritual and earthly.
